We often say that Teakisi runs on community, and that could not be more true than when it comes to the people who give their time, energy and care to volunteer with us. Teakisi exists to serve and empower people across marginalised communities – those often unheard, overlooked, or excluded from conversations about opportunity and belonging. And while many of our programmes have been especially supportive of women, we are not a women-only space. We support people of all identities and backgrounds, particularly those from ethnically diverse communities in the North East and Cumbria. Our volunteers make that work possible. In fact, they shape it.
From the moment someone arrives at a Teakisi event, there’s a sense of being seen. That sense doesn’t happen by accident, it’s created intentionally by people who greet with warmth, who listen with care, and who show up with a genuine desire to be part of something bigger than themselves. Our volunteers are behind the scenes setting up chairs, testing microphones, preparing refreshments, but they’re also out front: translating when needed, holding space for difficult stories, celebrating milestones, and simply making others feel safe and welcomed. They bring a personal touch that no training can replicate, because they serve from lived experience, empathy, and joy. That’s the heart of it.
Volunteering at Teakisi is not about doing charity, it’s about community. It’s about building a culture where people uplift one another and where we leave no one behind. Because in the very communities we support, many people face deep isolation made worse by language barriers, immigration status, racism, discrimination, or simply being new to the area with no one to turn to. Our volunteers help change that. And the benefits flow both ways. Volunteering isn’t only about what you give, it’s about what you gain. Our volunteers tell us they’ve developed new skills, gained confidence, built networks, and even opened doors to employment, education or public speaking opportunities they once didn’t think were for them. It can start with one event and grow into something life-changing.
For some, it’s the friendships made over coffee at community events. For others, it’s the pride of simply knowing they made someone smile that day. We see and honour every contribution, big or small – because it all matters. Whether it’s one hour a week or leading full projects, each act of service is a step towards the inclusive, affirming future we believe in.
So this Volunteers’ Week, we’re taking a moment to say thank you. Thank you for your time. Thank you for your trust. Thank you for choosing us. And if you’re reading this and wondering if volunteering might be for you, it is. There’s no special qualification or perfect background needed. Just a willingness to be part of something real, something human, something rooted in care.
We’re always looking for new volunteers to join us. Whether you’re interested in events, digital support, community outreach or simply want to lend a hand and learn, we’ll find the right place for you.
