I’ve said in the past that, in the fight for equality, diversity and inclusion must be embraced. That is why this year, Teakisi is proud to support Show Racism the Red Card, the UK’s leading anti-racism education charity. According to the UK government, racism, or a ‘racist incident’, is any incident, including any crime, which is perceived by the victim or any other person to be motivated by a hostility or prejudice based on a person’s race or perceived race.
The Home Office reports that in 2018/19 there were 103,379 hate crimes recorded by the police in England and Wales, an increase of 10 per cent compared with 2017/18 (94,121 offences). This continues the upward trend in recent years with the number of hate crimes recorded by the police having more than doubled since 2012/13 (from 42,255 to 103,379 offences). The majority of hate crimes reported were race hate crimes, accounting for around three-quarters of offences (76%; 78,991 offences).
ABOUT SHOW RACISM THE RED CARD
This charitable organisations aims to combat racism through enabling role models, who are predominately but not exclusively footballers, to present an anti-racist message to young people and others. On a recent visit to their north east of England offices, I learnt that they acknowledge that racism changes, as do the experiences of Black, Asian and minority ethnic communities in the UK. And according to Ged Grebby, the CEO, “the message and activities therefore need to be able to respond to such changes as and when appropriate”. In addition to the direct education of young people and adults, SRtRC produces educational resources, to challenge misconceptions, stereotypes and negative attitudes in society.
Each October, Show Racism the Red Card holds its annual Wear Red Day! This year, the annual event took place in Scotland on Friday 4th October, and will take place in England and Wales this Friday 18th October 2019. Wear Red Day is a national day of action which encourages schools, businesses & individuals to wear red and donate £1 to help facilitate the delivery of anti-racism education for young people & adults throughout England, Scotland & Wales. For just £5, SRtRC can educate one child for a whole day. Every penny raised during WRD enables the campaign to work with more young people and adults across the UK to challenge racism in society.
