Admit it – you’ve said the words more than once, not because you really had a lot happening, but because it felt good saying it; it made you feel like you’re doing something worthwhile.

Technology is racing super-fast and we have no choice but to make sure we keep up thus making almost every aspect of life something to be occupied with. Aside the chronically lazy folk who could care less about what they may be missing out in life, every person wants to be seen doing something. Idleness is a disease and people shy away from those who are comfortable idlers like it’s contagious.

It is good to find purpose in waking up each day with something to do. It is good to plan and prioritize. However, being all over the place with ‘I’m busy’ as your ring tone and facial expression when called upon, amounts to nothing if you’re not being productive.

Most people hide behind this mantra and bail out on taking care of important obligations, spending time with family or helping out a friend with a need. As much as everything you are doing is important to an extent (doing your bid to make this world a better place, hopefully), know that taking a pause to rest or enjoy the moment isn’t wasting time. Working yourself to the bone may earn you some credit but don’t do it at the expense of your health. Remember no matter how great you are at what you do, everyone is replaceable. The moment your seat is vacant, they will find another person to occupy it.

I’m yet to hear of any over-appreciative boss who would ‘retire’ your position in your honor when you exit.  As much as your boss may appreciate you, the business comes first. Likewise, put your family and health first. After all is said and done, your family is all you will ever have and you will need good health to enjoy the moments spent together.

It’s good to be busy with something; yet it’s better to be productive and yielding results. Are you really busy or just showing off?
